WHY HAVE YOUR CHILD TUTORED?
BUILD UP THEIR CONFIDENCE
Many children want to be tutored because they lack confidence in a particular area at school.
My aim is to help your child to understand the underlying concepts in literacy and maths rather than repetitively practising skills, so I use equipment such as counters and Base 10, as well as games and whiteboards for all lessons to ensure that they can see why we do things in certain ways.
I also quickly build up a positive relationship with your child so that they feel relaxed working with me. I give out plenty of encouragement so that they feel confident in discussing
their work and I use questioning to check that your child has grasped the concept we are working on.
SEN/EAL
I love working with neurodiverse children and use games, songs, actions, flashcards and whiteboards to move their learning on. I'm always happy to include "brain breaks" and will get them out in the garden if the weather allows!
Children with special needs often struggle within the classroom setting due to the noise and distractions around them. In addition, being 1 of 30 in a class means that their teacher is unable to offer them as much 1:1 time as they need.
Children who come from non-English speaking homes frequently struggle to understand what is being said in the classroom and, as such, it is easy to fall behind in their learning.
Giving them an extra hour a week of dedicated, personalised learning can help them make significant progress and build their confidence immensely.
11+
Year 5 is the perfect time to start tutoring sessions if your child hopes to take the 11+ entrance exam, as they are usually held during the October of Year 6.
Local entrance exams have three parts: English
composition and comprehension; maths; and verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Children often find the reasoning papers the hardest as they are not taught in schools and, as such, are a focus of 11+ sessions. Most children absolutely love the mental challenge of spotting patterns and enjoy learning how to answer this type of question. It is also useful for your child to be used to the style of the papers and how to answer the questions as they can be daunting at first!
I am also happy to expand the tutoring sessions to include preparation for the English and maths papers.
HOME SCHOOLING
More and more families are choosing to home school their children for a variety of reasons, and it can be a very successful and enjoyable way of educating your child.
However, some parents struggle with the maths and English curriculum which is where having a tutor can be a blessing!
Although, as home-schoolers, you do not need to follow the National Curriculum, you will want to prepare your child for life by teaching them the essential maths and English skills. I have the resources as well as the knowledge to cover this and take the stress and responsibility from you!
I can offer two-hour daytime sessions for up to 4 children of similar abilities, half English, half maths with a snack break in the middle.
